Selected Poems from the Divani Shamsi Tabriz

A selection of the great lyrical mystic poetry of Jalal al-Din Rumi. The Divani Shamsi Tabriz is a master piece of Persian literature and a classic work in the history of Sufism. With his Masnavi it is one of the key writings of the renowned mystic poet Jalalu’ddin Rumi (1207-73).
Professor Nicholson’s English translation of selected poems from the Divan of Rumi is the best-known version in a European language but it has been unobtainable for a number of years. It is now again made available; for scholars and students of Persian literature also to all those interested in the mystical literature of Islam. The Persian text is printed with facing English translations, also there are copious notes, a lengthy introduction, appendices and index.

JALALUDDIN RUMI was born in 1207 in Balkh and died in 1273 in Konya. The greatest mystic poet of Iran and Islam, seven centuries later, has become the most popular poet in America.
REYNOLD ALLEYNE NICHOLSON (1868-1945) is considered one of the authorities on Rumi. His edition of the Masnavi-ye Manavi is a standard. He wrote more than a dozen works on Rumi and Sufism. A.J. Arberry describes him as “the perfect scholar, so devoted to his books that he blinded himself by reading, so modest and humble that he was totally unaware of his greatness.” In Selected Poems from the Divan Shams Tabrizi, Nicholson has selected his favorites from Rumi’s love poems.
